Rich in history

Charters Towers is renowned for its rich heritage stemming from the 19th-century gold rush. Immerse yourself in the golden era of Australia’s history as you explore the architecture, tourism attractions and artwork installations that pay homage to the gold rush pioneers those who developed Charters Towers to the town you see today.

Standing at over seven metres high and a diameter of four metres with a granite base carved with stories of the Charters Towers region. Presented to Charters Towers as a gift in celebration of 150 years since the declaration of the goldfields.
Australia’s largest hand-made mosaic mural is a fine arts depiction of the town and the people of Charters Towers. This five-million ceramic and glass tiled masterpiece was commissioned by owner Paul McIver with historical assistance of Michael Brumby and local archive groups and painted by artist Trisha Lambi.
Goldtower Central pays homage to Charters Towers history with the installation of 10 Mosaic Murals by artist Peter Lawson. The art pieces are illustrations from the book The Town They Called the World – Charters Towers, 1984.
Commemorating the three local mines of modern times in the Region. The art installation includes an overview of each mine as well as listing all the mines operating in the peak of the gold rush era.
